Liverpool have completed the signing of Iago Aspas from La Liga side Celta Vigo.
The 25-year-old forward is a product of Celta’s academy and made his debut during the 2007-08 season before solidifying his place in the starting line-up the following year.
As the focal point of the club’s attack, he lead them to promotion at the end of the 2011-12 season after bagging 23 goals, before scoring a respectable 12 upon Celta’s return to La Liga.
And he has been rewarded with a move to the Premier League.
A statement on Liverpool’s website read: Liverpool Football Club are delighted to confirm the signing of striker Iago Aspas, subject to international clearance.
The deal with Celta Vigo is now complete and the 25-year-old has penned a long-term contract af…
DC United midfielder Branko Boskovic will depart the MLS side, after club and player decided to part company.
Boskovic, 32, revealed personal reasons were behind his decision to leave RFK Stadium, after helping United to the Eastern Conference finals this season.
I have had some private family matters for several months now, Boskovic said.
It s a difficult decision for me after a very good season here. I think that we will get better and better, but now I must leave. I wish all the best to this team and this club. This city is going to be my heart in the future.
Boskovic originally signed with United as a Designated Player in June 2010.
The Montenegrin midfielder suffered a torn ACL early in the 2011 season, wiping out the rest of his campa…
There were several controversial moments of the match between Liverpool and Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday which ended with a 2-2 draw, but rarely has been anything as controversial as this in the game.
Players have often been criticized of late for the way they interact with the officials, but this is surely unacceptable from assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis, regardless of the context. A player who does this would surely be sent off and face a lengthy ban.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the body responsible for appointing officials in English football, issued a statement after the game, saying they were aware of the incident and that it would be investigated.
this angle is HORRIBLE for the ref. there’s no justification, he’s ju…
Organisers of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa insisted Wednesday preparations remain on track after the city of Port Elizabeth was stripped of the right to stage matches for the dress rehearsal.
The decision on Tuesday to drop the southern coastal city from the line-up for the 2009 Confederations Cup means none of the five stadia being built from scratch will be showcased for the traditional warm-up event.
However FIFA secretary-general Jerome Valcke told reporters Wednesday the move should not be seen as a vote of no confidence in South Africa s ability to have everything ready for the kick-off in just under two years time.
Nothing is ready (yet) but everything has to be ready and will be ready for the World Cup, said Valcke.
There was a red ligh…
The unifying afterglow of Portugal s Euro 2016 triumph will turn somewhat cooler on Sunday when two of the country s traditional heavyweights ready themselves for a first battle of the new season.
Sporting CP host Porto in Lisbon, with both sides occupying the top two positions in the Primeira Liga at the start of this weekend thanks to two wins from two matches.
Reigning champions Benfica, who are gunning for a fourth straight title, are the only side who will upset that pairing over the coming months.
Such is the dominance of Os Tres Grandes in Portuguese football – only twice in the history of the top flight has the winner come from outside the triumvirate – that it is only fair to see the national team s moment of euphoria in France as a collective o…
Thomas Tuchel s first match in charge of Chelsea ended goalless as the Blues drew with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening.
The best chances of the game arguably fell to the hosts, with Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz spurning great opportunities for the home side. Wolves did threaten in the second-half though, with Pedro Neto going closest and chipping an effort off of the crossbar. A goal was not forthcoming for either side though as the points were shared in West London.
Here are three things we learned from Stamford Bridge:
Tuchel plumps for the old guard
Even before kick-off, it was clear that new Chelsea boss Tuchel intends to utilise his more experienced players at Stamford Bridge. The likes of Olivier Giroud, Cesar Azpilicueta a…
Double champions Real Madrid kept up the pressure on Barcelona in the Spanish title race defeating Recreativo Huelva 1-0 on Saturday to stay six points behind their arch rivals.
Brazilian Marcelo scored three minutes into the second half to sink Recre as Real made it 15 wins from 17 league matches under coach Juande Ramos.
The problem for Real is Barcelona are also winning week-in, week-out and triumphed 1-0 at Getafe on Saturday thanks to Lionel Messi s 20th goal of the season.
Argentine Messi netted on 19 minutes to seal Barcelona s first win at bogey side Getafe since 2005 and the victory means Pep Guardiola s side have now defeated every team in the top-flight this season.
It is another important win and each one gives us more confidence, said Guard…
FIFA president Sepp Blatter has suggested he could stand for re-election when his mandate expires in 2015.
After winning another term in office in 2011 Blatter said it would be his last, but the 77-year-old has since hinted he could stand again.
Blatter, who is currently attending the FIFA Development Seminar in Grand Cayman, feels he still has a lot to offer but remained coy on whether or not he would definitely stand again.
I m now 38 years in FIFA and I have this mission and I want to fulfil my mission, he said.
I feel young enough to be in this office and to make this office a success.
It keeps you young also if you ve got a mission and I ve got a mission.
When asked if he would stand again, he added: My intention is to finish this mandate. We …
As revealed by the club, Italian giants Napoli have officially confirmed the signing of Fabian Ruiz. The 22-year-old midfielder has been considered a promising talent in European football for a while now, making a name for himself with hometown club Real Betis. The youngster appeared in almost every single La Liga game for Betis last season and was an instrumental part of their midfield line-up.
Ruiz also scored three goals last season and will be signing for Napoli on a five-year deal. The Italians will be attempting to bounce back from the disappointment of failing to win the Serie A title in 2017/18 after they pushed favourites Juventus all the way until the final stretch of the season before missing out by just four points.
Now, they ll be more determined than ever …
Everton suffered a 3-2 defeat at Bolton s Reebok Stadium earlier today. It was their second consecutive defeat but that s not worrying part at the moment. The worrying part for Everton fans and players is the number of players available to boss David Moyes.
Another injury crisis
David Moyes has done a superb job as Everton boss. He has taken Everton from relegation strugglers to a top six Premier League side. I m worried for Everton this season though as with every game another player seems to be added to the treatment room.
Small squad
Everton had one of the smallest squads in the Premier League last season and had three key players out of action. Long term knee injuries to defender Phil Jagielka, midfield star Mikel Arteta and striker Yakubu didn t hin…
